We love the smell of spring, those humid green floral wafts the nose gets as soon as we’re crossing through a park. They’re all the more arresting in an urban environment amongst exhaust fumes, heated cement, traffic noise, take away food and the incessant throngs of hurried bodies going about their day to day life. But once you step inside the cool, green space of a city park it’s like you’re in a parallel universe. There comes the realisation that world has different sounds too, not only cars whooshing by but also  the gentle rustle of leaves and birds chirping. And different smells as well, clearer, more alive: dewy grass, flowers, trees in bloom, pond water and freshly turned earth.

The spring force of nature, with its avalanche of sensations even in restrictive city limitations is captured in the luminous 1A-33, a moist white floral, with a beautiful, honeyed linden blossoms note and a lemony, smooth jasmine and magnolia mix. It feels like an escape out of a stifling office into enchanting public gardens, like a leisurely stroll under flowered magnolia and linden trees. It feels like beauty.

The German company J.F. Schwarzlose & Sohne was founded in 1856 by the manufacturer of musical instruments – Joachim Friedrich Schwarzlose – as a family pharmacy business for his sons. The pharmacy was located at Markgrafenstrasse 9 in Berlin, and from this base the sons expanded into the creation of fragrances.

The family established a reputation for fine fragrance among imperial and royal personages, surviving the Great Depression and enduring through two world wars. However, the J.F. Schwarzlose company (like many other German companies of that period) faltered after World War II and was declared defunct in 1976, leaving behind only treasure trove of archives and memories.

In November 2012 this once renoun German brand was restored and returned to the market. The J.F. Schwarzlose Berlin brand was reborn through the launch of four fragrances inspired by classic scents of the house, but designed in conjunction with perfumer Veronique Nyberg to appeal to a modern consumer.
