The great Sufi poet, Rumi wrote: “If anyone wants to know what “spirit” is, or what “God’s fragrance” means, lean your head toward him or her. Keep your face there close. Like this.”

“Like This” was created by perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui in collaboration with the actress Tilda Swinton, an original, unconventional personality whose almost alien beauty has fascinated and inspired movie directors, makeup artists, photographers, fashion designers and in this particular case, a perfume house, one at least as unconventional as Tilda herself. You could say it was a match made in heaven, or more precisely, in Paris.

Given her androgynous, glacial looks, perhaps many were expecting an icy, austere compositon, yet “Like This” is surprisingly warm and homely. It is what she wanted, the soothing power of the familiar after facing the unknown, the restorative embrace of the smells she loves: the worn wood of her big kitchen table, the spicy-fresh aroma of ginger, messy bunches of immortelles plonked casually into thick ceramic vases, a mug of warm milk flavoured by curls of lemon zest, and the peaty, smoky breath of the Scottish Highlands after rain.

And Mathilde has captured for Tilda, harmoniously and elegantly, the aura of the place she calls home, in portable form, to carry in the pocket like a secret, a medicine and a dream.

Etat Libre d’Orange (“Free State of Orange”) is a French perfume house founded by Etienne de Swardt in 2006. With a motto of Le parfum est mort, vive le parfum! (Perfume is dead, long live perfume!), the house has quickly established a reputation for its daring and unusual compositions with controversial names and images.

Citing the year of their foundation as “Year Zero of perfumery”, Etat Libre d’Orange drafted a company “Declaration of Independence”, with six articles that outline the company’s creative approach, commitment to high-quality materials, simplicity in packaging and subversiveness of concept. The fragrances are genderless and were initially packaged in identical bottles bearing the company name and logo, though fragrances with distinct packaging began appearing in 2007 with Tom of Finland. The company has partnered with a number of celebrities, including Rossy de Palma, Tilda Swinton and the Sex Pistols to produce special edition scents, and has commemorated Tom of Finland and Josephine Baker with fragrances as well.
