Studio 54 tuberose

Nuit de Bakélite

Studio 54 tuberose

Nuit de Bakélite

Tuberose Absolute, Galbanum

Angélique Flower, Immortelle

Woods, Leather, Styrax

“Nuit de Bakelite” is one of the most stupendous tuberose fragrances you’ll ever come across: sparkling, green, lively but also with a hefty dose of sensual glamour, due to the pronounced earthy, musky, leathery character of the dry down. If you’ve ever wondered how it would feel like to travel back in time and step into the famous Studio 54 NYC club, on a hot Saturday night, back in the late seventies, we think “Nuit de Bakelite” would give you a fabulous olfactory glimpse into the excitement of it. The frisson of anticipation, the irresistible rhythm of loud dancing music, the sartorial prowess displayed by all the party-goers and their uninhibited behaviour, all are distilled into this unbelievably alluring floral-leather that is “Nuit de Bakelite” and it’s no wonder that, back in 2018, it has garnered almost every major olfaction prize going. With “Nuit de Bakelite” perfumer Isabelle Doyen has proved herself as one of the greatest talents of our times. “Nuit de Bakelite” is original, while also being timeless and effortlessly wearable, and it’s amongst the very few truly inspiring and exciting tuberose compositions in the world. “Nuit de Bakelite” shimmies and sways on the skin, moving like a feline between an array of different tonalities. In the beginning “Nuit de Bakelite glints like emeralds thrown onto the muddy ground: it is intensely green, a virile, hard, yet glamorous intensity which draws you in and doesn’t let go. You couldn’t call this vibe fresh, it doesn’t have the good natured simplicity of citrus notes for example, but sophisticated and elegant do come to mind. Remember those party-goers we were talking about? The green notes is them making their entrance, all swagger, plumes and sequins, turning heads as they’re ambling along the lit up boulevard. This is why we’re being brought back in time, because many fragrances in the seventies used to open up with very green bouquet of notes. This is not to say “Nuit de Bakelite” is dated and stuffy, on the contrary. This is a fragrance of minimalist opulence, which is the hallmark of all the great moderns. There is space and air between the notes, and a compositional clarity which keeps us firmly in the present times. And that’s even more evident as the fragrance progresses, as the tuberose here is very avant-garde in its lack of sweetness and the smoky tones which embrace its fleshy petals. Reminding us of how many of the Studio 54 patrons were visionaries and ahead of their time. None of their crazy antics dimmed their aura, same as the resinous, voluptuous and heady dry down of “Nuit de Bakelite” doesn’t take away from its elegance.

So here you are: wildly vegetal up top, magnetic floral in the middle, and an arousing mix of sweet resins, smoky woods and sexy leather at the end.

Simply a must have!
