With a name like this (Hotel Slut) we were expecting some crude, loud fruitchouli, the saccharin, teeth-rotting type of which there are aplenty. The gap between our preconceived notions and the perfume itself has proved to be a chasm: “Putain des Palaces” is an impossibly endearing creation, tender and velvet soft, foiled by the merest hint of carnal sensuality. And yet, that subtle suggestion of funk is the crucial element which elevates this perfume from mere prettiness to compelling femininity.

This Nathalie Feisthauer composition is a delicate floral, veiled by sheer aldehydes and ensconced in a deliciously voluptuous amber shell. There are hints of powder, a prominent rose-violet combo with its intimations of makeup, traces of pliable, warm nubuck leather and faint animalic notes, enough to bring to mind the skin of a woman. She is real, you can almost touch her, breathe in her scent, watch her as she watches herself in the mirror, dusting a little bit of powder on her nose, zipping up her black leather and lace dress, finally ready to meet the man she loves.

Etat Libre d’Orange (“Free State of Orange”) is a French perfume house founded by Etienne de Swardt in 2006. With a motto of Le parfum est mort, vive le parfum! (Perfume is dead, long live perfume!), the house has quickly established a reputation for its daring and unusual compositions with controversial names and images.

Citing the year of their foundation as “Year Zero of perfumery”, Etat Libre d’Orange drafted a company “Declaration of Independence”, with six articles that outline the company’s creative approach, commitment to high-quality materials, simplicity in packaging and subversiveness of concept. The fragrances are genderless and were initially packaged in identical bottles bearing the company name and logo, though fragrances with distinct packaging began appearing in 2007 with Tom of Finland. The company has partnered with a number of celebrities, including Rossy de Palma, Tilda Swinton and the Sex Pistols to produce special edition scents, and has commemorated Tom of Finland and Josephine Baker with fragrances as well.
