The original Shangri La was introduced in 2014 as the followup to Hiram’s debut fragrance Moon Bloom. It was inspired and named after the fictional land descried in James Hilton’s 1933 novel Lost Horizon. Hilton describes Shangri La as a mythical Himalayan utopia, an earthly paradise isolated from the rest of the world where people are almost immortal. Hiram translated the beauty and purity of Shangri La into a contemporary interpretation of a classic chypre perfume.

Chypre perfumes are characterised by a contrast between a fresh citrus accord and a woody-oakmoss base. The first chypre dates from 1917 and since then this fragrance genre has enjoyed enduring appeal.

It takes a good nose to distinguish the 2022 edition from the original Shangri La. The most noticeable difference is perhaps a lighter and warmer character with greater emphasis on floral and spicy notes. Adding more oakmoss was not an option as the original version already includes the highest regulatory amount possible.

Shangri La is a bright and airy perfume with a lush and exotic character. The fragrance opens with a sharp burst of lemon, orange and bergamot that is followed by a rich bouquet of peach, jasmine, orris, rose, cinnamon and warm spices. This opulent heart is anchored by an earthy base of vetiver and oakmoss.

Since 2013 Canadian born perfumer Hiram Green has been creating handcrafted perfumes from the finest natural ingredients. His perfumes challenge the often-heard criticism that natural perfumery is boring, fast fleeing and has less sillage than traditional perfumery. Hiram’s perfumes are best described as intense, opulent and expressive. This is in part due to the precious and sometimes extremely costly natural ingredients that he sources from all over the world.  The perfumes’ rich colours come from the ingredients therein and give the bottles their jewel-like appearance.

The initial inspiration for a perfume could come from anything: from music to art to travel. An abstract idea is then slowly, and with extreme care and precision, translated into something tangible. It is not uncommon for Hiram to make hundreds of trials over the course of several years before settling on the final formula. The perfumes have been praised by experts and enthusiasts. In 2019, Leather-themed fragrance Hyde won the Art & Olfaction Artisan award. This international award celebrates excellence in independent, artisan and experimental perfumery.

The range currently consists of seven eau de parfums. All perfumes are 100% natural, vegan (with the exception of beeswax absolute in Slowdive) and free of GMO. Nothing is tested on animals. Everything is developed and produced in small batches in Hiram’s studio in Gouda, The Netherlands.
